| Furness Abbey Founded in 1123, this is the second largest Cistercian Abbey in England. The magnificent ruins, which are managed by English Heritage are set in a beautiful wooded valley - The Vale of Deadly Nightshade. Piel Island Home to Piel Castle, built by the monks of Furness Abbey to protect their harbour from the Scots.
